Dry Needling Therapy Now Offered at Complete Game Physical Therapy

Complete Game Physical Therapy is proud to offer another service in our new North Chelmsford clinic.  We now have Dry Needling available as a stand alone treatment or as an adjunct service to regular physical therapy sessions. While this is not a new treatment option in the physical therapy world, we know that it might not be something that our patients have heard of or know about.

First, Dry Needling is used to treat pain and stiffness in various areas of the body by safely injecting thin needles into “trigger points” in soft tissue. This creates an increase in blood flow, release tightness, and decreases pain. Research into Dry Needling has shown it to effectively treat pain and improve function.

Here are the answers to some common questions that we have been asked.

What is Dry Needling?

Dry Needling is a skilled intervention using disposable, sterile thin filiform needles to penetrate the skin and stimulate the underlying myofascial tissue.  It is performed by a licensed physical therapist who has undergone extensive specialized training in this procedure.  Dry Needling is NOT acupuncture as dry needling focuses only on the injured or sore area of the body.

Dry Needling can be used as part of a standard physical therapy treatment to help improve range of motion and reduce pain even faster.  It can also be used as a stand alone treatment for athletes and active individuals looking to improve recovery or reduce soreness after workouts or competitions.

Does Dry Needling Hurt?

The needles used are so thin you usually feel nothing when they are inserted.  The underlying muscle may twitch and that can be mildly sore but that usually then allows the muscle to relax improving range of motion and recovery.  Most patients report no pain, if anything just some soreness the following day as if you exercised the muscle treated.

Is Dry Needling Covered by Health Insurance?

Most insurance companies do not cover dry needling as part of a physical therapy treatment or a stand alone treatment.  It is a cash-based service.
