Complete Game PT Baseball Roundtable Recap
At Complete Game we are always working to not only provide the best care for athletes and active individuals after injury but also help prevent injuries from occurring in the first place. For the second year in a row, we hosted a Baseball Roundtable event where we brought together some of the leaders in baseball sports medicine, training, and coaching to discuss ways to help reduce the likelihood of injury and improve baseball player performance. This year was incredibly well attended by players, parents, and coaches with some excellent information provided by our speakers and very insightful discussion between speakers and attendees. Here are some highlights from the evening:
Dr. David Ruchlesman- Chief of hand and upper extremity surgery at Newton-Wellesley Hospital was the first to speak and he reviewed common baseball-related upper extremity injuries seen in his office and surgical techniques related to these injuries. He gave some great insight into his thought process and the considerations he uses with his patients in making decisions in surgical vs conservative treatment in these injuries.
Greg Crossman DPT- Sports physical therapist and owner of Complete Game Physical Therapy spoke, giving some statistics on the incidence of injury in youth baseball and some common questions he gets in the PT clinic from athletes and parents. Greg also covered some ways to reduce the likelihood of injury including arm care programs and biomechanical analysis.
John O’Neil- Director of performance and co-owner of Cressey Performance Massachusetts talked about how he got into performance training and how it brought him to become director of one of the top baseball performance training centers in the country. He gave excellent insight into what goes into training high-level professional, college, and high school baseball players. He also talked about simple steps that can be taken at any level to help reduce injury and improve performance.
Mike Glavine- Head coach Northeastern University rounded out the speakers' presentations with a great talk on what they do at Northeastern University for arm care and how it has helped them compete at the national level. He also discussed some of what his recruiting process looks like and what he looks for in recruits.
It was a great night with valuable information and lively discussion. We believe that a key to helping reduce injuries in baseball is to get the medical, training, and coaching together with players and parents to all share information to make us all better. Keep an eye out for more roundtable-type discussions in the future. In the meantime if you would like to get you or your athlete in to see us for 3D motion analysis, physical therapy, or injury prevention programs email Sara at scarpenito@completegamept.com for more information.
